'Pushkaram'

It is a full-moon night
Wives have left their husbands
for the river-bank
Now stripped they are in the river

Sixty-four of them at a time
indistinguishable limb from limb
body from body
Each female form perfectly beautiful

The tree bends to the river
and the full moon fallen in it
is completely visible
When one searching for Krishna finds

A lonely youth    Shrinking
and lovely to look at
Making love to one
And thinking it to be everyone.

Note: 'Pushkaram': the day the secret river meets the sea, every 12 years
