Yesterday I visited the Turkish side of the city
35 years ago I'd been to the Greek sector
I had met Stephanides, Greek Cypriot, last year in India
Yesterday, I saw a young Turk exactly resembling my Greek friend
He could have been a younger version of Stephan
He could have been his younger brother
Or indeed his son
Till yesterday these men were of one mien
One Cypriot race
Who divided brother from brother?
My young guide said tersely:
'The British'
[British tourists cheered wildly
across No-Man's Land]
